Shaolin monks are much like other monks in their beliefs--- their ultimate goal is to achieve enlightenment by ridding themselves of earthly desires. But the way they go about their lives is so extreme, you might wonder if these men are earthly at all.
Shaolin monks are trained in the special art of Shaolin kung fu.
The training is rigorous and is just as hard on the mind as it is the body.
The monks practice techniques centered around balance, strength, endurance, and self defense.
As they begin to master these skills, the limits of their bodies become nearly nonexistent.
They can endure incredible amounts of pain while barely flinching.
What their bodies can do is symbolic of the inner balance they achieve through their training.
They believe that limitations, like desire, grow within the mind.
Once the mind is strengthened, the body can achieve nearly anything.
While the idea may seem bizarre to those who have never experienced it...
...for these monks, it's just a way of life.
